Colinford Mattis and Urooj Rahman were two liberal lawyers who were caught throwing a Molotov cocktail inside of a police car during the George Floyd BLM riots. “I hope they burn everything down,” Rahman told Mattis in a message hours before protests formed. “Need to burn all the police stations down… probably all the courts too.” “Go burn down 1PP” Mattis responded. “Bring it to their [sic] neck.” They faced charges with a mandatory minimum of 45 years overall. Even if only convicted on the top charge, the mandatory minimum they faced was 30 years in prison for their terrorist act. They were given very high-profile pro bono representation and a full-court PR propaganda and lobbying blitz in their favor. Despite the terrorism charges and lengthy sentences faced, the two were inexplicably granted pre-trial release and home confinement.
