Too many people vote emotionally rather than analytically. Anger, fear, personality, tribal loyalty, and dislike of the other side can outweigh careful examination of policy and results.
Party identity becomes a substitute for thinking. Once someone decides “my side is good and their side is bad,” contradictory evidence gets rationalized away.
Short memories matter. People often react to what happened recently rather than looking at a politician’s full record over several years.
