Colinford Mattis and Urooj Rahman were two liberal lawyers who were caught throwing a Molotov cocktail inside of a police car during the George Floyd BLM riots. “I hope they burn everything down,” Rahman told Mattis in a message hours before protests formed. “Need to burn all the police stations down… probably all the courts too.” “Go burn down 1PP” Mattis responded. “Bring it to their [sic] neck.” They faced charges with a mandatory minimum of 45 years overall. Even if only convicted on the top charge, the mandatory minimum they faced was 30 years in prison for their terrorist act. They were given very high-profile pro bono representation and a full-court PR propaganda and lobbying blitz in their favor. Despite the terrorism charges and lengthy sentences faced, the two were inexplicably granted pre-trial release and home confinement. A litany of legal and bar associations, showing their utter contempt for the law, released statements in support of the two defendants. The American Muslim Bar Association put it thusly: “AMBA is in solidarity with the Fordham Law community, the NYU Law community, 56 former federal prosecutors, and the Legal Services Staff Association 2320, in their stances against the federal government’s aggressive charging and pursuit of pre-trial detention of Urooj Rahman and Colinford Mattis. This, when the focus should be to dismantle the root causes of state violence and systemic racism against the Black community.” The Biden DOJ dropped the top charge and allowed them to plead to a single conspiracy charge. That sweetheart deal carried a statutory maximum of only 5 years in prison. Biden prosecutors only asked for 18 to 24 months imprisonment for the terrorism charges. Incredibly, the defense argued for time served. Each had spent about a year in home confinement. The judge, a George W. Bush appointee, sentenced Rahman to only 15 months imprisonment, and Mattis to only a year and a day. “You are a remarkable person who did a terrible thing on one night,” the judge told the Pakistani immigrant. With such contempt for the law, it’s no wonder Antifa has gone unpunished and left-wing terrorism has metastasized rapidly over these past ten years.
