Judge orders Letitia James and New York governor to respond to challenge seeking her removal as special prosecutor
New York Acting Supreme Court Justice James R. Farrell signed an order to show cause concerning Letitia James and her appointment to investigate sexual-assault allegations involving former Cornell University fraternity members.
Attorneys for Gillio Lopes argue that James publicly prejudged the allegations before being appointed special prosecutor.
Confirmed developments:
October 7: Lopes filed a petition challenging James's appointment.
October 9: Judge Farrell signed an order requiring James and Governor Kathy Hochul to respond.
October 29: The court has scheduled oral arguments.
The court has not removed James, found misconduct, or halted the criminal investigation. The allegations of prosecutorial bias remain disputed. �
