The U.S. Senate is about to slink away for a two-week Easter/Passover "State Work Period" while the Department of Homeland Security shutdown hits Day 40+—leaving TSA agents unpaid, airport lines snaking for hours, border security strained, and critical operations crippled. This is outrageous. DHS isn't some optional bureaucracy; it guards our borders, skies, coasts, and against cyber threats at a time when real dangers don't pause for holidays. Yet here we are: House Republicans passed funding bills, Republicans offered compromises (even isolating certain ICE funding), and Senate Democrats keep blocking, filibustering, and moving goalposts with demands for new restrictions on immigration enforcement that have zero chance of passing. Majority Leader John Thune called their latest counteroffer "not even close to being real"—just recycled demands already rejected, going in circles while essential workers miss paychecks and travelers suffer.
