Major development — U.S. military involvement in the Houthi front has expanded

There is one consequential development since the last alert.

Reported by CNN from five sources familiar with the operation: more than 100 U.S. military advisers are now on the ground in Saudi Arabia, providing intelligence and targeting assistance for Saudi operations against the Iran-backed Houthi movement. One U.S. official puts the overall American contingent associated with the newly established joint command at roughly 200 personnel.

The assistance reportedly includes geospatial targeting intelligence and a real-time battlefield targeting system comparable to the Pentagon's Maven capability. Importantly, the sources say American forces are not themselves conducting strikes, refueling Saudi aircraft, or directly participating in combat operations.

So this needs a careful distinction: the American deployment/support is credibly reported but has not been publicly confirmed in detail by the Pentagon. A Defense Department official declined to discuss intelligence-related matters.

Why it matters: yesterday we learned that President Donald Trump reportedly rejected a Saudi request for direct American attacks on the Houthis. This new information shows that Washington nevertheless has substantially increased its involvement behind the scenes as the Houthis advance toward the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

That is an important middle position: Trump has apparently stopped short of opening another direct U.S. combat front, while putting American personnel, intelligence and targeting capabilities behind Saudi efforts to stop the Houthi advance.

The energy situation is also deteriorating, although I don't count it as a separate military escalation. The International Energy Agency now says normal Middle Eastern oil flows may not recover until 2027, while inventories are shrinking and global refining capacity is severely stretched. Brent remains around $106/barrel, more than 10% higher for the week.

I find no newer confirmed large U.S. or Iranian strike, American mass casualties, successful attack on a U.S. warship, Iranian leadership change, or diplomatic breakthrough that meets your threshold.
