🚨 Major escalation: the Yemen offensive has now officially begun
This clears your threshold and materially changes what I reported yesterday.
Confirmed today, October 4: Rashad al-Alimi, head of Yemen's Saudi-backed Presidential Leadership Council, has formally announced the start of military operations to retake Houthi-controlled territory. This means the operation we had been watching as a possible Saudi-backed offensive has moved from planning into execution.
The escalation is already substantial. The Saudi-led coalition says it carried out 97 targeting operations against Houthi forces around Taiz and the Tor al-Baha front using aircraft, drones, artillery, missiles and snipers.
Why it matters: The objective is no longer simply retaliatory strikes. The stated goal is to recapture territory from the Iran-aligned Houthis and restore Yemeni government authority. If the offensive develops on the scale previously reported—potentially involving tens of thousands of Saudi-backed Yemeni troops—it could significantly weaken Iran's strongest remaining regional proxy and alter control around the strategically critical Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
There is also a significant diplomatic development involving Strait of Hormuz. Iran today publicly hardened its position, saying the Strait will not formally reopen until the United States satisfies seven conditions contained in the June interim agreement. Qatar continues mediating, but Tehran says the immediate dispute is over implementation and sequencing rather than renewed nuclear negotiations.
That is not a complete diplomatic breakdown, but it means there has been no breakthrough despite Washington's response to Iran's proposal.
One clarification from yesterday is important: the Houthis' claim that they struck the Saudi Aramco facility near Riyadh remains disputed. A fire at the facility was observed, but Saudi officials now call the Houthi claim misleading. I therefore still would not treat Houthi responsibility as confirmed.
Bottom line: The big change this morning is Yemen. The Saudi-backed offensive we've been watching is no longer merely a contingency plan—it has officially been announced and military operations are underway. That opens a much more dangerous regional phase of the Iran conflict.
