A federal grand jury issued a new subpoena today, August 31, to Daniel Richman, James Comey’s longtime friend, attorney and adviser. Multiple law-enforcement sources say the subpoena is part of a new DOJ investigation into allegations that Comey authorized the disclosure of classified information to the New York Times through Richman.
This is significant because it appears to be a separate investigation from Comey’s existing “86 47” criminal case. Richman was previously involved in an earlier investigation of Comey-related leaks, but today’s grand-jury subpoena represents fresh compulsory legal process.
